Admissions: M.U.S.T. Launches a New Program of PhD in Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE) and a New Program of MSc in Materials Science and Engineering (MMSE)

Starting from the 2024/2025 Academic Year, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Faculty of Innovation Engineering at Macau University of Science and Technology (M.U.S.T.) will launch a new Ph.D. Program- Doctor of Philosophy in Materials Science and Engineering and a new Master Program- Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering, the online applications are available until August 15, 2024.

Training Platform

The Macau University of Science and Technology established the Department of Materials Science and Engineering within the Faculty of Innovation Engineering in March 2022 to leverage its research strengths in materials science and engineering. Led by Chair Professor Shuit-Tong Lee, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Fellow of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS), the department operates under the auspices of the Macao Institute of Materials Science and Engineering (referred to as "Materials Institute"). The Materials Institute serves as a platform for nurturing talent and conducting high-level research to support technological innovation in the country and the Greater Bay Area.

In the fields of engineering, chemistry, and materials science, Macau University of Science and Technology ranks among the top 1% globally in the Essential Science Indicators database (ESI). In the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy's "2023 Academic Ranking of World Universities", the university's nanoscience and technology program ranks in the 201-300 range worldwide, while its materials science and engineering program ranks in the 301-400 range.

Teaching Staff

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Faculty of Innovation Engineering, has assembled a team of internationally renowned researchers and educators who possess strong research capabilities and extensive teaching experience. Currently, there are 23 full-time faculty members, including academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Foreign Academicians of the Academia Europaea. All faculty members have overseas research experience and graduated from prestigious universities such as MIT, Stanford University, California Institute of Technology, Ohio State University, and Georg-August-Universität Göttingen. Their research areas span multiple disciplines, including materials science, chemistry, physics, electronics, and biomedical sciences, which helps broaden graduate students' research perspectives.

The faculty members have also undertaken numerous national and regional major scientific research projects, including key special projects of the National Key R&D Program, major and key projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), and Key R&D Projects from the Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT). These projects are well-funded, providing ample resources for research.

 

Program Objectives

The Doctor of Philosophy in Materials Science and Engineering program aims to cultivate innovative high-level research talents with solid subject expertise, broad academic horizons, and strong research abilities in the field of materials science. It strives to become a talent base for materials science and economic development in Macao and meet the talent needs of strategically emerging industries in Macao and the country.

The Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering program aims to train applied professional talents with international standards and technical innovation capabilities in the field of materials science, cultivating senior specialized talents who can engage in research, teaching, development, production, and management work in related fields.

Through the training provided by the program, graduates will gain an in-depth understanding of the progress and cutting-edge developments in domestic and foreign materials science subjects, possess the ability to independently conduct research in materials science and engineering, and become outstanding talents with international vision, independent thinking skills, and interdisciplinary advantages. They will inject vitality into the innovation-driven development and economic growth of the material science field. Additionally, during their period of study, students have plenty of opportunities to go abroad for exchange programs to broaden their horizons, and their mentors can provide guidance and recommendations.

 

Employment Advantages

According to data from the "China New Materials Industry Market Prospects and Investment Strategy Planning Analysis Report" released by Qianzhan Industry Research Institute, the total output value of China's new materials industry was only 0.6 trillion yuan in 2010, increasing to 6.8 trillion yuan in 2022. By 2028, it is expected that the scale of China's new materials industry will reach around 17.8 trillion yuan. The new materials industry involves many industrial sectors and has a broad market prospect. It is one of the most important and fastest-growing high-tech industries in the world. The Macao and Greater Bay Area regions, as the most economically active areas in all of China, provide a large number of employment opportunities for graduates in materials science and engineering due to the presence of numerous multinational corporations and high-tech enterprises in the region. 

Graduates will possess profound knowledge and a wide perspective in materials science, as well as strong research skills, enabling them to work in government agencies, academic institutions, high-tech enterprises, and other related fields in Macao, Mainland China, or even worldwide. Scholarships

The university offers generous scholarships and financial aid for postgraduate students, such as academic performance scholarships and academic research assistantships (PGS), to encourage and support excellent students to pursue their studies diligently. Students who perform well after enrollment may also be recommended for institutional scholarships and grants.

 

Admission requirements:

To apply for a Ph.D. program in Materials Science and Engineering, applicants should fulfill the following requirements:

ü   Hold a master's degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Environmental Science, Medicine, or a related field;

ü   Provide proof of English proficiency: a minimum score of 480 on the College English Test Band 4 (CET-4); or a minimum score of 450 on the College English Test Band 6 (CET-6); or a minimum score of 6 on IELTS; or a minimum score of 79 on TOEFL; or equivalent proof of English proficiency.

 

To apply for a Master's program in Materials Science and Engineering, applicants should fulfill the following requirements:

ü   Hold a bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Environmental Science, Medicine, or a related field;

ü   Provide proof of English proficiency: a minimum score of 480 on the College English Test Band 4 (CET-4); or a minimum score of 450 on the College English Test Band 6 (CET-6); or a minimum score of 6 on IELTS; or a minimum score of 79 on TOEFL; or equivalent proof of English proficiency.
